In a critical study it cannot be accepted as fact that Thucydides wrote a "History of the Peloponnesian War." The work which in contemporary translations goes under this title was inscribed ... simply as "syngraphe," a word that can best be translated by the slang "write-up"; and what he "wrote up" was "the war between Peloponnesians and Athenians" ( xynegraphe ton polemon, etc.).
